Marty Hernandez is passionate about everything she does. Her passion for paying the bills is fulfilled
by working at The Oregonian as an accounting clerk. Marty's other passions are music, Olympic-style
weight lifting, and marathons.
The Gypsy Violin segment in "Darling Lili" ignited her passion for music. At 13, armed with a $27
palomino colored Suzuki violin from Tijuana, a viola bow from Capt. Whizeagle's music shop, and $25-
a-year lessons at the Madeleine Parish, Marty started her quest to become that gypsy violinist. Overcoming
this dubious beginning, she went on to earn her B.A. in Music from Portland State University.
Marty has studied with Sister Helen Sandoz, Carl Ottobrino, Carol Sindell, Robert Hirtzel, and Gretchen
Tucker. She joined CSO in 1987. In addition to CSO, Marty performs regularly with Newport Symphony.
She has performed with Portland Chamber Orchestra, in Mock's Crest's Gilbert & Sullivan
productions, and with various pick-up groups.
A passionate runner, Marty has run the Portland Marathon six times. She plans to expand her marathon
palate to other cities and countries, including the 2008 Royal Victoria Marathon in B.C.
Marty's goals in life are good company, good food, play great music, and maybe run a marathon in
less than 4 1/2 hours!
